Where God Draws the Line

It seems that not many can blush anymore regarding nakedness. There has been an ever increasing public exposure of the human body in these days and most people seem to be getting used to it like getting used to the dark. Many Christians are confused as to just what the Bible standard is for the believer to avoid shameful nakedness.

More nakedness is on display in public places today than could be seen in a burlesque show not many years ago. Man wants to do his thing. He wants his own way. He wants to decide for himself. He has rejected the Word of God, and can no longer blush with shame. (Jer. 6: 10) "...behold, the word of the Lord is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it" (Jer. 6:15) "Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not all ashamed, neither could thev blush..." Satan desires to make us naked to our shame, but when we come to Jesus, we will regain our senses and clothe our nakedness. (Luke 8:27) "...a certain man...and WARE NO CLOTHES..." (Lk. 8:35) "...and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, CLOTHED, and in his RIGHT MIND..." Notice how drunkenness and nakedness go together. (Habakkuk 2:15) "...makest him DRUNKEN also, that thou mayest look on their NAKEDNESS." Notice how one becomes despicable when nakedness is exposed. (Lamentations 1:8) "...all that honored her DESPISE her, because they have seen her nakedness..."

We know that all sin will get worse and worse as we approach the coming of our Lord. (II Timothy 3: 13) "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.”

Some say that everyone is doing it, so why shouldn't we go along with the rest. In the first place everyone is not doing it, only the carnal minded. God will always have a remnant of the faithful. Secondly, we are not to follow a multitude to do evil. (Exodus 23:2) "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil... "

What, then, are we to do? What is the answer? We must seek the wisdom and counsel of God Where do we find that? We find it in God's Word. What does it tell us?

The New Testament clearly says that "modest apparel" is God's standard for the believer. (I Timothy 2:9) "...that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel."

This standard does not seem to be specific enough for many people. I really don't know why. All a woman or girl needs to do is look carefully in a mirror or else ask the "man" of the house. Here is, however, one of the problems - there aren’t many houses with a "man" in them.

Is there more specific instruction from God to guide our understanding of nakedness and shame? Yes!

God certainly does speak clearly on this issue. He tells us specifically how much exposure constitutes nakedness.

In the Old Testament, Israel was not to have steps going up to the altar, so the priest would not expose his nakedness and under his robe while ministering at the altar in the presence of the congregation. (Exodus 20:26) "Neither shalt thou go up by steps, unto mine altar, that thy NAKEDNESS be not discovered thereon."

In order to further prevent this possibility, the priest was to wear linen breeches under his robe to hide his nakedness. Notice carefully just what part of the body was to be covered, so his nakedness would not be exposed. (Exodus 28:42) "And thou shall make them linen breeches to COVER THEIR NAKEDNESS: from the LOINS even UNTO THE THIGHS shall they reach."

You can further read in (Verse 43) that to fail to do so would bring upon that priest the guilt of his iniquity and death.

God describes his judgment upon Babylon in Isa. 47. In this passage, God states that making the leg bare to the extent of uncovering the thigh is causing their nakedness to be uncovered and their shame to be seen. (Isa. 47:2, 3) "...make bare the leg, uncover the THIGH...thy NAKEDNESS shall be uncovered, yea, thy SHAME shall be seen."

Since the thigh is that part of the leg above the knee, any public exposure above the knee is uncovering the thigh and thus is a shameful exposure of our nakedness. THIS IS WHERE GOD DRAWS THE LINE!

Now I realize that much more could be said about low-cut neck lines, tight and revealing clothing and many other such things, but I believe this all could be cured under the heading of "modest apparel" which should be the concern of every Godly Christian. However, what we have seen in this study should be sufficient to cause every sincere, Bible believing Christian to STOP WEARING SHORTS IN PUBLIC! This also would restrict the Bible follower from wearing a bathing suit in public!

But some would object and demand the right to their own opinion in this matter, and we could certainly find many. We must, however, recognize that when God speaks clearly concerning any matter, we do not have the right to another opinion. (Psalms 119:128) "...I esteem all thy precepts CONCERNING ALL THINGS to be RIGHT... "

Remember, we are not our own, we are bought with a price - We are To GLORIFY GOD IN OUR BODY (I Cor. 6:19-20).
